Gen Z is ditching bras in latest viral trend: ‘Let them be free’

Gen Z women are embracing going braless, and the freeing move has taken the internet by storm.

The hashtag “No Bra” has over 600 million tags on the social media platform TikTok and women are sharing their outfits and looks without any underwire in sight.

Being braless has become such a thing that the #nobrachallenge is going viral on the platform and has over 9 million views.

It sounds sexy, but it mainly just involves women sharing what they look like in fun outfits while not wearing a bra, and the trend seems to help normalize different breast shapes.

One creator, Vaninileon, went viral by sharing that she would attempt to go braless for the whole week.

“I have big to medium-sized boobs, and I want to try and go braless for at least one week,” she said.

She explained that she didn’t like wearing bras during summer because it was ruining her fashion moments.

“Honestly, with every cute top, they are visible,” she vented.

The TikTok got millions of views, and people were very invested in following her fashion journey.

“I will be following your journey with great interest,” someone commented.

“Trust me when I say no one is going to judge you in any negative way whatsoever,” someone else wrote.

“Let them be free!” another advocated.

Women don’t just want to burn their bras, they want to know how to style their outfits without underwire.

It’s become such a movement that you’ll see celebrities like singer Dua Lipa and model Kendall Jenner often out and about rocking the no-bra trend.

Of course, not every Gen Zer with their low-waisted jeans is keen to jump onboard.

TikTok creator Lacey Claire filmed a silly video of her braless in a white crop top to point out that being free from underwire wasn’t for everyone.

“Trying to wear a crop with no bra as a big girled girlie,” she captioned it.

The video has been viewed millions of times with plenty of women sharing they don’t feel they can entirely embrace the no-bra trend.

“Mine are tiny, but they’re divorced,” one wrote.

“Mine looks like a huge tent,” another complained.

“The fact that so many people have the same issue makes me feel less alone,” someone shared.

Psychologist Carly Dober explained that the trend is a big “statement” from young women.

“Emotionally and psychologically, not wearing a bra can be a statement about how you want to present yourself to the world, and also how you want to cover up very normal body parts,” she said.

Dober said many women feel “liberated” by not wearing a bra, which is a sign of young women wanting to reclaim their “agency.”

Dober explained that the no-bra trend is also a really positive thing for those choosing to embrace it.

“I think anything that allows people to present themselves to the world the way they would like to is ultimately beneficial. It can be empowering and freeing to go braless — so if Gen Z is exploring what bras mean to them, I say keep exploring.”
