Giants’ Rakeem Nunez-Roches suffers concussion in car accident outside team facility

Giants defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches is in concussion protocol after he was involved in a car accident leaving the team facility on Tuesday, per The Athletic.

Nunez-Roches didn’t suffer any injuries other than the concussion, the report said.

The Giants signed the defensive tackle, 30, to a three-year $12 million contract this offseason after the veteran spent five years with the Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl.

Nunez-Roches is an eight-year veteran of the Chiefs and the Buccaneers, and he’s played 102 games and started 38 times throughout his NFL career.

His signing was a way for the Giants to bolster their run defense, which ranked 27th in the NFL last year with 144.2 yards per game.

The 6-foot-2, 307-pound nose tackle will play alongside Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams, who anchor the interior of the defensive line.

“’Nacho’ brings an older mindset to the group, and he knows how to work,’’ Lawrence said earlier this summer. “He knows how to train, and he’s eager to get better. He’s not stubborn or anything like that. Us all having the same mindset and growing and getting better together.’’

In 17 games throughout the 2022 season, Nunez-Roches had 33 tackles and two sacks, playing a role in a Tampa Bay run defense that finished 15th in the league in rushing yards allowed.

The Giants open preseason play on Aug. 11 against the Lions and kick off their regular season on Sep. 10 against the Cowboys at home.
