A metallic collar that once belonged to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is set to hit the auction block.
The medieval-looking “pegasus” collar was produced by jewelers Stella & Dot and gifted to the Justice by Los Angeles–based lawyer Susan Hyman — an RBG superfan.
The collar is scheduled to be sold by Potomack Auctions. A portion of the sale will be donated to American Bar Association’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg Endowed Fund for Research in Civil Rights and Gender Equality.
During her 27 years on the bench Ginsburg became famous for her numerous judicial collars, with many taking on symbolism and meanings of their own. She had one for when she was in the majority, and another when she was in dissent.
Ginsburg wore the martial Pegasus collar during the court’s official 2018 photograph — the first to feature Justice Brett Kavanaugh. It was also her first day back after recovering from a fall which fractured her ribs.
“The collar sent the unspoken – but very clear – message that the justice was back in action and ready for duty,” the auction house noted in their description of the item.
Ginsburg died in 2020 and was replaced by Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
