Ireland and Colombia’s Women’s World Cup warm-up match was cut short on Friday after just 20 minutes of play.
Irish player Denise O’Sullivan, 29, reportedly suffered a shin injury during the game and was taken to the hospital for scans.
Two Colombian players were dealt yellow cards within the opening 19 minutes, causing Ireland to consult with match officials and ultimately call off the game.
“The game, which was held in Meakin Park, Brisbane, became overly physical and it was decided, following consultation with the match officials, to end the game,” the Football Association of Ireland said in a statement, according to The Sun.
Ireland proceeded to hold a team training session on the field after the contest concluded.
The game was held behind closed doors as the media were reportedly not permitted to attend, and the seriousness of O’Sullivan’s injury has yet to be revealed.
The Colombian Football Federation said that the “friendly match” was suspended because Ireland “preferred not to continue playing.”
“Although all the processes and training of our teams are framed within the rules of the game, healthy competition and fair play, we respect the decision of our rival team,” the club continued in its statement, according to BBC.
O’Sullivan’s status update will be highly anticipated as she is a key component to Ireland’s 2023 squad.
The midfielder has been capped for 101 games with the Republic of Ireland, garnering 19 goals throughout that time.
O’Sullivan has spent the last four seasons with the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, kicks off July 20.
Ireland will face Australia in Sydney for its opening game on July 20 in Group B play.
Colombia will compete against South Korea on July 25 in its opening game in Group F play.
