Deivi Garcia back with Yankees in his new role

Deivi Garcia is getting another chance in The Bronx.

The onetime top pitching prospect, who has transformed into more of a middle-relief role, was recalled Thursday after the Yankees optioned Randy Vasquez back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following another strong start Wednesday in a loss to the Orioles at the Stadium

Garcia ate up some innings in the Yankees’ ugly 14-1 blowout loss to the Orioles on Thursday night, throwing 2 ²/₃ scoreless innings.

He gave up one run over three innings in his only previous appearance for the Yankees this season, a lopsided win over the Athletics on May 10.

Garcia has appeared in three games at Triple-A since June 28 and allowed a run over 3 ²/₃ innings in another inconsistent season for the 24-year-old.

Vasquez, who tossed five scoreless innings Wednesday, has made three spot starts for the Yankees this season, but it’s unclear when they might need him again in the majors.

Carlos Rodon is set to make his debut for the club on Friday after he missed almost all of the first half due to a left forearm strain and back tightness.

The Yankees need another arm in the bullpen with the loss of Jimmy Cordero, who was suspended for the rest of the season for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.
