Jimmy Cordero latest in string of MLB domestic violence policy suspensions
Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero’s suspension Wednesday is the latest in a string of bans under MLB’s domestic violence policy.
The details of why Cordero was banned aren’t yet known, but he accepted a suspension for the rest of the season, which is 76 games plus any potential playoff games the Yankees have.
The 76-game ban is the eighth-longest in the history of the league’s domestic violence policy, behind Domingo German’s 81-game suspension.
Cordero is the third Yankee suspended under the policy; Aroldis Chapman was the first player suspended under the policy, banned 30 games in 2016 for a 2015 incident in which he allegedly choked his girlfriend and fired gunshots into his garage ceiling.
Here are the 10 longest suspensions issued under the policy.
Trevor Bauer, Dodgers, 194 games
Bauer was initially suspended last April for 324 games, two full regular seasons, after he was accused of punching and choking a woman during two sexual encounters.
The pitcher was reinstated by MLB in December, with his suspension cut short at 194 games, the longest ban under the league’s policy.
Bauer signed with the Yokohama DeNA Baystars in Japan for the 2023 season.
Sam Dyson, free agent, 162 games
In March 2021, Dyson was suspended that entire season after his former girlfriend, Alexis Blackburn, accused him of physically abusing her.
Dyson, a reliever, was a free agent at the time and hasn’t pitched in the majors since he was with the Twins in 2019.
Jose Torres, Padres, 100 games
Torres was arrested in December 2017 on domestic violence charges after an alleged incident at a home he shared with a woman in which he was accused of brandishing a gun.
The reliever was suspended 100 games in June 2018, and he’s been out of the major leagues since then.
Carlos Martinez, free agent, 85 games
Martinez, whose nine-year stint with the Cardinals included two All-Star selections, was suspended 85 games in September 2022 for an undisclosed violation of the league’s policy.
In May 2022, the starting pitcher, who had just been released by the Red Sox, was banned 80 games for a PED violation.
He has not pitched in the majors since 2021.
Odubel Herrera, Phillies, 85 games
Herrera was suspended for the rest of the 2019 season that June after he was arrested on suspicion of simple assault the month prior.
The outfielder allegedly physically abused his girlfriend at the Golden Nugget casino in Atlantic City.
His girlfriend declined to press charges.
Herrera, a 2016 All-Star, remained with the Phillies organization into last season and signed with the independent Kansas City Monarchs last month.
Hector Olivera, Braves, 82 games,
The third baseman/outfielder was arrested in April 2016 after allegedly assaulting a woman at an Arlington, Va. hotel during a Braves series against the Nationals.
Olivera was suspended 82 games the following month.
He was traded to the Padres later that season but never played in the majors again.
Domingo German, Yankees, 81 games
The Yankees right-hander received an 81-game ban in January 2020 after an alleged violent incident with Maria Vega, the mother of his children, on Sept. 16, 2019.
Eighteen of those games were served at the end of the 2019 season.
German has remained a part of the Yankees rotation and pitched a perfect game on June 28.
Jimmy Cordero, Yankees, 76 games (plus postseason)
Cordero had a 3.86 ERA in 31 games this season, his first in the majors since he was with the White Sox in 2020.
Roberto Osuna, Blue Jays, 75 games
The reliever was suspended 75 games in June 2018 after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman in Toronto a month earlier.
He was traded that July to the Astros, who he pitched for through the 2020 season.
Osuna currently pitches for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan.
Jose Reyes, Rockies, 52 games
The former Mets shortstop was suspended from the start of the 2016 season through May 31 of that year after he was arrested in October 2015 in Hawaii after allegedly grabbing his wife by the throat.
He was later designated for assignment by the Rockies and the Mets brought him back in June 2016.
