Teen surfer bitten by shark off Fire Island, 2nd possible attack reported nearby

A 15-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while surfing off Fire Island Monday and a teenage girl was possibly attacked nearby in the waters at Robert Moses State Park, according to officials and a report.

The teen boy was riding some waves when the shark nipped his left heel and toes around 5:20 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

The young surfer quickly swam to shore at Kismet Beach where a good Samaritan provided medical aid until county marine bureau officers reached the scene, authorities said.

The boy’s heel and toes were intact, and he was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier in the day, a 15-year-old girl was bit, possibly by a shark, off Field 3 at Robert Moses State Park around 1:45 p.m., Long Island Parks Regional Director George Gorman told Newsday.

The girl was treated for small puncture wounds on her left leg, the newspaper.

Lifeguards deployed enhanced drone patrols to scour the surface of the water, but couldn’t locate any sharks.

Swimming was off limits for 45 minutes before park visitors could splash around again, Gorman reportedly said.

The confirmed shark attack off Fire Island was the first of the 2023 summer season on Long Island after there were eight reported attacks last year, according to Newsday.
