Ron DeSantis became a millionaire last year — but still owes student loans

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is now a millionaire, thanks to the book he published to boost his presidential run — but he’s still paying off his student loans.

The GOP candidate more than tripled his net worth to $1.17 million in 2022, according to a financial disclosure form filed with the state of Florida Friday, a steep increase from the $319,000 he declared in June of 2021.

DeSantis listed just two sources of income last year: his governor’s salary of $141,400, and $1.25 million from HarperCollins Publishers.

The payout was part of a reported $2 million advance on his February memoir, “The Courage to Be Free.”

Both HarperCollins and the Post are owned by News Corp.

The book, a New York Times bestseller, sold nearly 170,000 print copies through mid-June, the Wall Street Journal reported — strong sales for a candidate’s autobiography.

DeSantis — who sold his family home in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. when he moved into the governor’s mansion in 2018 — reported no real estate assets or investments.

Instead, he parked his cash in checking and savings accounts with USAA, a bank for military members and veterans, and a pair of retirement funds.

But the 44-year-old is still carrying more than $18,000 of student loan debt from his college days at Yale University and Harvard Law, paying down about $2,600 of it last year as he roasted President Biden for promising to eliminate the student debts of millions of Americans.

“It’s very unfair to have a truck driver have to the pay back a loan from somebody that got like a Ph.D. in gender studies,” DeSantis said in August. “That’s not fair. That’s not right.”

The Supreme Court on Friday slapped down Biden’s plan to write off hundreds of billions of dollars in federally held student loan debt, ruling it an overreach of presidential authority.
