Starling Marte should have listened.
On Thursday night, a female fan implored Marte not to “swing at everything,” as the outfielder approached the plate with the Mets down 3-2 against the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and the bases loaded.
“Don’t swing at everything!” a woman was seen exclaiming on the SNY broadcast as Marte proceeded to, well, swing at everything.
The veteran right-fielder struck out on three pitches with the Brewers’ Devin Williams leaning on his changeup, closing out Milwaukee’s 3-2 win at Citi Field.
The Mets dropped three out of four games to the Brewers in this week’s series as they continue to sink down the standings.
“It’s frustrating because there’s a game there to be won,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said postgame. “We’re kind of snakebit from that standpoint it seems like.”
The Mets, who fell to a season-worst nine games under .500 and 17 back in the NL East, threatened in the ninth inning but couldn’t seal the deal.
Mark Canha was walked with one out then Francisco Alvarez singled.
Before Luis Guillorme grounded to first, Canha stole third base and Brandon Nimmo’s walk loaded the bases for a desperate Mets squad.
But it wasn’t enough.
Marte ended the night with a swing and a miss, dropping the Mets to a 36-45 record.
Marte had a tough night as a whole, going 1-for-5 with two strikeouts and grounded in two double plays.
The loss wasn’t all on Marte’s shoulders, though, as other teammates took accountability for the various missteps.
“Anytime we lose by one, you always look at what could you have done to prevent one extra run from scoring, and you’re always going to look at yourself,” said Max Scherzer, who gave up a two-run homer in the sixth inning to Victor Caratini.
The Mets open their series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, the first of three games at Citi Field.
