New Yorkers head to polls for Election Day to vote for City Council, other races
New Yorkers will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in the primary races for City Council, Queens and The Bronx district attorney contests and several judgeships.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and you can find your polling site here.
Just 44,611 early votes were cast during the nine-day, early voting period that ended Sunday at 5 p.m., according to an unofficial tally from the New York City Board of Elections.
But not all districts have a race to follow and Staten Island has no primaries at all.
Queens DA Melinda Katz, seen as the establishment candidate who netted an endorsement from Mayor Eric Adams, has two Democratic challengers.
On her left, Katz faces public defense lawyer Devian Daniels who has come under fire for failing to file papers for her candidacy with the Board of Elections.
Ex-judge and retired NYPD first deputy commissioner George Grasso is running to her right.
Katz scored a last minute, cumulative $50,000 in donations from billionaire Mets owner Steve Cohen and his wife, Alexandra.
The power couple each kicked in $25,000 donations to the DA’s re-election campaign on June 13, according to the state Board of Elections.
Incumbent Bronx DA Darcel Clark has a primary from criminal defense lawyer, Tess Cohen.
Certain City Council races have been heating up, particularly in the newly created 43rd district in southern Brooklyn’s.
The majority Asian district has a three-way primary contest between candidates Wai Yee Chan, Stanley Ng and Susan Zhuang.
It spans Bensonhurst, New Utrecht and parts of Dyker Heights and Sunset Park.
In Harlem, longtime Democratic Assemblywoman and former Councilwoman Inez Dickens is running against exonerated Central Park 5 candidate Yusef Salaam and her Assembly colleague, Al Taylor.
Voters will use the recently approved ranked choice voting system for the council primary races, which allows individuals to choose up to five candidates in order of preference. But for the November general election, voters will return to the regular option of choosing one candidate per office.
District attorneys and civil court judges are state officeholders, so they are not subject to the rank choice system.
