The mothership which deposited OceanGate’s Titan submersible on its doomed journey to the Titanic has returned to port in Canada.
The Polar Prince arrived at St John’s Harbor in Newfoundland Saturday morning, with a photo showing its empty platform.
The vessel took part in search and rescue efforts for the Titan submersible before its remains were discovered on Thursday.
The uncertified craft suffered a catastrophic implosion as it descended into the North Atlantic Ocean.
Its five passengers — OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, 61; Sulaiman Dawood, 19; his business tycoon father, Shahzada, 48; British billionaire Hamish Harding, 58; and famed Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77 — were killed.
The Polar Prince was a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker before being decommissioned and later used as a support ship for OceanGate.
“The Canadian Coast Guard offers our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the crew of the Titan for their tragic loss,” the agency said in a statement. “Search and rescue operations have concluded.”
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada also announced Friday it would be looking into the crash as fallout from the disaster continued, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The TSB said the investigation is “in accordance with the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and international agreements.”
