Iowa, Iowa State athletes involved in latest college sports gambling fiasco

More gambling allegations have emerged in college sports, with the latest involving athletes from Iowa State and Iowa teams.

Twenty-six students from Iowa and another 15 from Iowa State are involved in allegations of online sports betting, according to multiple reports, and the pair of universities have become the center of college sports’ latest potential betting crisis.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission had led the investigation into the Iowa athletes, according to USA TODAY, while the Cyclones said in a statement that they notified the NCAA about the potential violations.

“The Board of Regents is aware of concerns related to online gambling involving individuals associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University,” the Iowa Board of Regents said in a statement, according to The Athletic. “The Board of Regents and the universities will fully cooperate with any investigations related to these concerns.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and have confidence that University administrators at each institution will take all necessary steps to ensure ongoing compliance.”

According to the Des Moines Register, the athletes from Iowa participate in football, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s track and field and wrestling — in addition to one staffer in the athletic department.

The Athletic cited a timeline from Iowa that dates back to May 2, when the university was informed of the alleged gambling situation.

The allegations against the Iowa State and Iowa athletes follow a stretch where former Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon — since fired by the university — was in direct communication with an individual placing bets at the BetMGM Sportsbook at Great American Ball Park in Ohio, according to ESPN.

States such as Ohio and New Jersey all stopped handling bets related to the Alabama baseball program.
