Rex Ryan puts NFL on notice after Jets’ Aaron Rodgers trade: ‘Watch out, everybody’

A fired-up Rex Ryan kept the Jets celebrations rolling Tuesday morning — hours after the team traded for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster move.

Appearing on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Ryan, who coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014, put the league on notice on behalf of New York, all the while sporting a Gang Green-inspired wardrobe.

“This happens to be Super Bowl III [ring], my dad’s Super Bowl ring right here, and why am I wearing it? Because the Jets are going! And to me, watch out, everybody, here come the Jets, here come the Jets!” the coach-turned-analyst, 60, exclaimed.

Ryan, whose late father, Buddy Ryan, won Super Bowl III with the Jets in 1969, later proclaimed how Rodgers is “the missing piece” for the Jets, who failed to reach the postseason last year at 7-10.

“And you know what? Guess what, all you fans in the AFC East, it ain’t no fun when the rabbit’s got the gun!”

Ryan then lauded the defensive side of the ball before stating: “Our quarterback’s better than yours!”

“This is a great move right here, man, kudos to [Jets owner] Woody Johnson, to [head coach] Robert Saleh, [general manager] Joe Douglas,” he continued.

Aaron Rodgers traded to the Jets

On Monday, after months of speculation and rumors, the Jets and Packers came to an agreement on a trade that brings four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to New York.

The trade immediately upgrades the Jets from rising team to playoff contender with the hopes that Rodgers will help break one of the longest active postseason droughts in sports.

The trade

The Jets receive: Aaron Rodgers, No. 15 pick (2023) and No. 170 pick (2023).

The Packers receive: No. 13 pick (2023), No. 42 pick (2023), No. 207 pick (2023) and a conditional second-round 2024 draft pick that conveys to a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65% of the Jets’ plays in 2023.

What comes next

The trade still needs to be finalized — the terms of Rodgers’ contract need to be worked out — and sent to the NFL.

Both teams will begin feeling this deal as early as Thursday at the 2023 NFL Draft.

For the Packers, it’s now about getting fourth-year QB Jordan Love ready to take over. With Gang Green, it’s about getting a whole host of new faces on the same page offensively.

Rodgers has been on the Jets’ radar for much of the offseason, with team brass even flying out to Malibu in March to meet with the league’s four-time MVP.

On March 15, Rodgers stated on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he intended to play for the Jets in 2023.

Fast-forward to Monday and the highly anticipated deal finally came to fruition — much to the delight of Rodgers’ new teammates.

The Jets are sending their first-round selection in this year’s NFL draft (No. 13) to the Packers, in exchange for Green Bay’s 15th overall pick.

The Packers will also receive a second-round pick from the Jets (No. 42) and a sixth-round selection, No. 207 overall.

Additionally, New York is sending a 2024 conditional second-round pick that can become a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65 percent of the plays for the Jets this coming season.

The Jets also scored a fifth-rounder from the Packers, No. 170, in this year’s draft.

Rodgers spent the past 18 seasons in Green Bay, where he won one championship with the Packers.

The 39-year-old quarterback is expected to arrive in New Jersey on Tuesday evening, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini.
