Diamondbacks DFA Madison Bumgarner in sad $34 million move

The Diamondbacks are cutting their losses with Madison Bumgarner.

The veteran left-hander was designated for assignment on Thursday, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed, after another rough outing on Wednesday blew his ERA up to 10.26 through four starts this season.

Arizona will eat the approximately $34 million remaining on Bumgarner’s contract, which runs through next season.

Bumgarner was a four-time All-Star, three-time World Series winner and a World Series MVP with the San Francisco Giants, but he has struggled since signing a five-year, $85 million contract with the Diamondbacks after the 2019 season.

In 69 starts for the Diamondbacks, Bumgarner has a 5.23 ERA with 276 strikeouts, 116 walks and 66 home runs allowed in 363 ⅓ innings.

Arizona’s move comes after Bumgarner got into a verbal tiff with Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras during Wednesday’s game.

Contreras grunted after fouling off a pitch and Bumgarner clearly wasn’t pleased appearing to tell Contreras, “shut the f–k up, you pu–y, f–k you.”

Contreras then flipped his bat when he drew a walk.

“If you can’t see that, I don’t know how to help you,” Bumgarner told reporters when asked what he took issue with. “Not just today. Yesterday, today, probably another day if you picked a random day of watching [Contreras] play.”

Bumgarner did not push it much further.

“If I pitched better, I might give you something,” he said. “But I’ve gotta pitch better.”

During his 10-plus seasons with the Giants, Bumgarner had a 3.13 ERA with 1,794 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP in 1,846 regular-season innings.

He was a clutch pitcher for San Francisco in the playoffs, pitching to a 2.11 ERA in 102 ⅓ innings, including his legendary five shutout innings on two days’ rest in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series to win his third ring.

That came three days after Bumgarner threw a shutout in Game 5 over the Royals to give the Giants a 3-2 series lead.

Bumgarner can sign with a new team once he clears waivers.
