Yankees’ Anthony Volpe records first MLB hit against Giants

Cross one more “first” off the list for Anthony Volpe.

The young Yankees shortstop recorded the first hit of his career on Saturday afternoon in the Bombers’ 7-5 loss to the Orioles in The Bronx, in his second game and fourth major league plate appearance.

Volpe, facing Giants righty Alex Cobb in the second inning, got behind 0-2 before lacing a 1-2 slider through the left side, just out of shortstop Brandon Crawford’s reach.

Volpe received loud cheers and “Vol-pe!” chants upon reaching first base.

But he wasn’t there long.

The speedy 21-year-old induced a pickoff attempt from Cobb, then got a huge jump and stole second base — his second steal in as many big-league games — without a throw from Giants catcher Roberto Perez. He was stranded at second.

The 21-year-old Volpe, who also recorded a hit in the ninth inning, is hitting .333 with a walk and two steals in his young career.

He made his MLB debut on Opening Day after winning a shortstop competition against Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Oswald Peraza in spring training.

Volpe was the first rookie and youngest player to start in the Yankees’ Opening Day lineup since Aaron Judge in 2017 and Derek Jeter in 1996, respectively.

He wasn’t even on the 40-man roster last year and only logged 22 games at Triple-A.
