Jayme Hoskins is “heartbroken” for her husband, Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins, in the wake of his devastating injury.
Hours after Hoskins was carted off the field Thursday in a spring training contest against the Tigers, the Phillies confirmed the 30-year-old had torn his ACL and will need surgery.
Jayme, who has been married to Hoskins since 2019, responded to the saddening news from the Phillies by posting a “heartbreak” emoji on Twitter.
Hoskins attempted to field a ball during Thursday’s game but fell to the ground in pain on a non-contact injury.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson recalled the heartwrenching moment afterward.
“It was quiet,” Thomson said. “Nobody was saying a word.”
Right fielder Nick Castellanos put his hand on Hoskins’ shoulder as the team digested the harrowing events.
“I just put my hand on his shoulder, but you know, no words needed to be said right there,” Castellanos said. “What is there really to say? Everybody knows exactly what’s going on. When something like that happens, it’s not taken lightly.
“I think every single person on that field around him [realized] the seriousness of that moment.”
The Phillies said Thursday in a statement that further details pertaining to Hoskins’ surgery, “including the date and surgeon, are to be determined.”
Hoskins will likely miss a major portion, if not all, of the season.
Phillies fans have since rallied in support of Hoskins and Jayme.
“We’re all wishing you and rhys the best of luck as you handle the recovery process,” one fan tweeted to Jayme.
Another account said, “We love you guys so much. Sending you so much love and all the positivity we can. This city is behind Rhys and his recovery full blown.”
Hoskins is entering his seventh year in Philadelphia.
