2023 ACC Tournament odds, predictions: Duke favored over Virginia, Miami

It wasn’t very long ago that the ACC Tournament felt like a legitimate championship gauntlet of its own ahead of the NCAA Tournament, with an eventual Final Four contender almost guaranteed to emerge from the fray.

Boy, does that feel like an eternity ago after how this conference looked in the regular season.

Fourth-seeded Duke is the narrow favorite (+270) to win this week’s ACC Tournament after closing the regular season with six straight wins.

At the same time, top seeds Miami and Virginia are tied for the second-shortest odds at FanDuel (+350) ahead of Tuesday’s opening round.

ACC Tournament predictions

No team has more ACC Tournament titles than Duke (21), and Jon Scheyer has his team peaking ahead of this week’s tourney, too.

The Blue Devils completed a season sweep of the Tar Heels on Saturday to polish off a six-game win streak, during which freshman big man Kyle Filipowski and junior guard Jeremy Roach have emerged as a dangerous 1-2 punch with high-upside talent around them.

It’s worth noting that Duke’s last two losses came to Miami and Virginia, the respective owners of the top offense and defense in conference play.

Both teams enjoy a double bye, though the Cavaliers’ path looks particularly favorable with just three single-digit seeds on their side of the bracket.

One of those is North Carolina, which is priced as a contender despite a No. 7 seed and minimal momentum heading into Wednesday.

The Tar Heels’ elite shot-making carried them for three weeks last year, but those shots haven’t fallen all season long, and their defense is too inconsistent to expect another miracle run this time around.

Really, none of the teams in this conference stand out beyond the top three, if that.

But there are a couple of teams that are at least worth a look this week.

NC State has shown some flashes of brilliance this season, namely beating Duke by 24 points in early January and hanging with Kansas for 40 minutes in late November.

The Wolfpack doesn’t turn it over and has two legitimate go-to scorers in guards, Terquavion Smith and Jarkel Joiner, and an easy draw makes it even easier to back this group at an excellent price.

Also, are we sure Notre Dame is as bad as its 200/1 odds might suggest?

This team has certainly struggled in conference play (3-17), but I wouldn’t be shocked if Mike Brey’s group conjures up one last run for its longtime coach.

And, at this price, why not take a shot?

ACC Tournament picks

Truthfully, this is probably a tournament I’ll be staying away from on the futures side in favor of betting it game-to-game. But if I had to back one team, it’s Virginia.

The Cavaliers’ defense isn’t as suffocating as in years past, but they still bleed teams dry with their methodical approach and uber-efficient ball movement on the other end.

They also beat favorite Duke in their lone meeting in February and benefit from a strong draw in this tournament with the two biggest threats on the other side of the bracket.

I can’t say I love the short price here, on Virginia or any team near the top of the oddsboard.

Still, Tony Bennett’s team has won this tournament twice in the last decade and still employs a ruthless style that should play well in Greensboro against lesser competition.
