Two of Europe’s most storied soccer clubs will meet in the Champions League on Tuesday as Bayern Munich hosts Barcelona in each team’s second match of the competition. The Bavarians are -115 favorites over the Catalan giants, who travel to the Allianz Stadium as +240 underdogs.

But this is a different Barcelona side. After a couple of turbulent seasons, Barcelona has started to trend up with club legend Xavi at the helm. Barca sports a +1.99 expected goal differential per 90 minutes in league play this season, which is the second-best mark in all of Europe’s top-five leagues. Bayern isn’t far behind with a +1.79 xGD/90, but it does show that the gap between these sides has begun to shrink.
Stylistically, Barcelona could have some advantages as its defense has allowed just one goal and 3.5 expected goals in five La Liga matches in 2022-23. Shutting down Bayern Munich is a lot different from doing it against mid-table sides in Spain, but this Barca team should be able to cope just fine.
