This glamorous hideaway boasts ties to even more glamorous artists.
A waterfront mansion called La Vigie in the scenic peninsula town of Cap D’Antibes has hit the market. The French Riviera retreat, where Picasso once reportedly painted the garage’s walls during a stay, is currently asking for $27 million. The listing is held by Douglas Elliman and Jack Harris of Knight Frank.
“The name of the property, La Vigie, translates as ‘the lookout,’ named after the sensational views the home affords,” Harris told The Post of the home, which has a somewhat flexible floorplan, allowing for a set-up as either a seven or eight-bedroom with six or seven baths. Unlike many other area addresses, Harris noted, La Vigie is genuinely on the waterfront (“Most homes although described as frontline more often than not have a road between the house and the sea,” he explained).
In addition to being located directly on the coast, the grounds also feature a boat dock, boat house and infinity pool. Other amenities include a wine cellar, main salon, formal dining room and an office. A tower on the compound — which was built in 1912 — hosts two of the bedrooms, one bathroom and a lounge with an alfresco dining area and sweeping views of the sea and the pool house, depending where you look.
The primary suite has its own lounge, en suite bath and dressing room and an additional junior suite has a small balcony and salon section.
As for the home’s star-studded history, Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald, “American billionaires” and more are said to have stayed at the estate over the years, according to the listing.
During his stay at La Vigie in the summer of 1924, Picasso reportedly used the villa’s garage as a studio, painting on both canvases and its walls.
“The Picassos left La Vigie towards the end of September, but before their departure, the artist was made to pay for damage to the garage,” reads a clipping provided to The Post in regards to the incident. The walls were later covered over by the owner, the listing notes.
