Chris Cuomo’s upcoming TV show gets time slot, start date
Plans for Chris Cuomo’s new TV talk show are coming into focus.
The Post has learned that Cuomo’s new show on the fledgling NewsNation TV network will kick off on Oct. 3 and will air on weeknights at 8 p.m. on NewsNation.
The name of Cuomo’s show has yet to be revealed. Cuomo’s will be replacing Marni Hughes, who held the primetime slot. She will move to the 10 a.m. to noon block, according to sources.
The Post has also learned that NewsNation will try for continuous daytime coverage from noon to 5 p.m. starting in April.
A NewsNation rep declined to comment on Thursday.
Nexstar rebranded WGN America last year as NewsNation with the goal of launching a “fact-based, unbiased” network that delivers news 24 hours a day by next year. Currently, it has a mix of news and reruns that are averaging around 85,000 total viewers a day.
Cuomo revealed his comeback bid on Dan Abrams’ NewsNation show Tuesday night. The news marked the first time Cuomo has appeared on TV since being fired from CNN last year over his role in advising his older brother, then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
According to sources, NewsNation president news of programming Michael Corn revealed details of Cuomo’s new show to staffers during a Thursday meeting as he played a mashup of clips from Dan Abrams’ NewsNation show, in which the anchor slammed the media for taking shots at the network.
Abrams told viewers Wednesday– a day after his interview Cuomo– that many outlets that covered the news “minimized” the hire because it wants the Nextstar Media-owned network to “fail.”
“The politicized media wants NewsNation to fail,” Abrams claimed. “In the media landscape full of extremists, a network that gives voice to a moderate point of view is an outlier, or a disrupter, who represents an existentialist threat to a media which, for so long, has profited off of driving us to the fringes.”
NewsNation’s highest-rated show is cop drama “Blue Bloods,” which averages around 350,000 total viewers an episode, while the primetime slate pulls in an average of 50,000 viewers nightly.
Last week, Abrams’ 9 p.m. show averaged around 54,000 viewers while Banfield’s 10 p.m. show brought in just 33,000.
“The ratings are less than local news,” a source recently told The Post.
“They’re horrendous,” added another, noting that Corn “got a bargain in Chris Cuomo.”
“If Cuomo doubles the ratings to 100,000,” the hire will “be worth it,” the source concluded.
