It’s an MLB battle of the Sox on Wednesday as the Boston Red Sox and Rich Hill (1-1, 3.90 ERA) travel to Chicago to face the White Sox and Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.84).
Hill is coming off an outing in which he allowed six hits and four runs over just 2.0 innings before being chased from the game by the Seattle Mariners. He has gotten past the fifth inning only once in seven starts this season.

Things won’t get any easier for Hill on Wednesday against a White Sox lineup that crushes left-handed pitching. Chicago is batting .263 and averaging 4.86 runs versus lefties. That’s compared to hitting .226 and averaging 3.34 runs versus righties heading into Tuesday, so there is a big edge for the White Sox any time a left-hander is on the mound.

Giolito will need to pitch better than he did in his last outing versus the Red Sox when he lasted just one inning in a 11-4 loss on April 19, 2021. He’s also facing a hot Boston offense that was averaging seven runs per game in its last 10 heading into this series.
Prior to Tuesday’s clobbering, the White Sox have had Boston’s number recently. Entering the series opener, Chicago had won four straight and seven of 10. Given how the White Sox crush left-handers and Hill’s inability to go long into games, look for that trend to continue on Wednesday night.
