Long shot golf bets to win the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge

With the year’s second major championship in the rear-view mirror, the PGA TOUR now heads to one of golf’s most familiar courses for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge. The tournament tees off on Thursday, May 26 and will be broadcast on CBS, Golf Channel and ESPN+.

Colonial Country Club has played host to this event since 1946, so bettors have plenty of course history to work with this week. Colonial is a short, precision-over-distance course that can play tough if the wind picks up.

Justin Thomas, fresh off his win at the PGA Championship, is the betting favorite at +800, but he’s got plenty of company at the top of the board with Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris and Viktor Hovland all sitting between +1000 and +2000 for the tournament.

While there is plenty of star power at the top of the board, this field isn’t all that deep. That, along with the fact that Colonial is not a course built for the bombers, could open some lanes for a longshot winner.

Here are a trio of players worth a look at long odds:

Charles Schwab longshot golf picks

C.T. Pan (+10000) — DraftKings

A third-place finisher here in 2019, C.T. Pan is the type of player who won’t be able to contend on long courses but is always worth a look when a track suits his game. And it’s not just the course fit that makes Pan worth a flier this week, he’s also quietly been in good form. The 30-year-old native of Taipei has made five consecutive cuts and has gained strokes on approach in seven consecutive tournaments.

Stewart Cink (+10000) — BetMGM

It seems like Stewart Cink may be a trendy triple-digit play this week and for good reason. Over his last five starts, Cink has two top-10 finishes and is coming off an impressive T23 showing at last week’s PGA Championship.

That result at the PGA is definitely worth weighing this week, as Southern Hills should play fairly similar to what the players will see at Colonial. Although Cink’s salad days are certainly behind him, the 49-year-old won twice last year and has shown he’s still got it in his locker to upset the odds and contend.

Russell Knox (+14000) — FanDuel

It’s been a funny season for Russell Knox. After starting the year in great form culminating with a T6 finish at THE PLAYERS, Knox has cooled off considerably over the course of the spring. But that’s just the type of player Knox is at this point.

He’s not going to string together results for an entire season, but in the right spot he can pop up on the leaderboard. This seems like a decent spot to target the Scotsman, as he’s good in windy conditions, can handle difficult tracks and has some strong course history at Colonial, including an eighth-place finish back in 2019.
