Escaped inmate Casey Cole White appeared grim and exhausted in a mugshot released after he was captured with Vicky White — while officials investigate who fired the round that killed the former jail boss as authorities closed in on them during a police chase.
The capital murder suspect was booked in Indiana on Monday after police ended an 11-day manhunt by ramming a Cadillac that Vicky White was driving during a brief chase in Evansville, Indiana.
Casey, with dark circles under the eyes, is wearing a yellow jail outfit as he frowns into the camera for the mugshot.
Vicky was said to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot, but Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” on Tuesday that her death remains under investigation.
“The coroner’s office will do an investigation and they will determine if it was a self-inflicted gunshot,” Wedding said, adding that the initial indication was that it was a suicide, “but we won’t rule anything out until we have a thorough investigation by the coroner.”
Wedding earlier said members of the US Marshals Task Force intercepted the couple and rammed the Cadillac, which rolled over.
“When this occurred, (Vicky) shot herself and (Casey) was injured, not too seriously,” he said, WHNT reported.
Meanwhile, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said Casey would be locked up in a cell by himself.
“He will stay in handcuffs and shackles while he’s in that cell and if he wants to sue me for violating his civil rights, so be it. He’s not getting out of this jail again. I’ll assure you that,” he said.
An emergency court hearing is set for Casey at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the Lauderdale County Courthouse, according to WHNT.
