Georgia man charged with murdering wife after reporting her death as suicide

A Georgia man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his wife, which he had attempted to pass off as a suicide, authorities said.

On March 27, deputies with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from Troy Scarborough, reporting that his wife, Shyanne Schroeder, 36, had shot herself in the head at the couple’s home on Holloman Road in the town of Gray, according to WSB-TV.

“The responding deputies got the feeling that something wasn’t right about this case, and thankfully they trusted their instincts,” Sheriff Butch Reece said in a prepared statement.

Scarborough, 45, was initially arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He remained behind bars while detectives reviewed evidence in his wife’s death.

“After leaving no stone unturned, it has been determined Scarborough caused Schroeder’s death,” Reece announced.

The sheriff did not say what evidence led his investigators to the conclusion that Scarborough was the shooter, but he thanked the FBI for its “technical expertise and assistance in this case.”

Scarborough was charged Friday with felony murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault. He is jailed without bond.

According to social media posts, Schroeder and Scarborough have three children.

Although no motive has been revealed, a status update that appeared on Schroeder’s Facebook page on January 11 suggests that her relationship with Scarborough was troubled.

“I have done nothing but push him away, lie to him, deceive him and cheat on him,” a person claiming to be Schroeder wrote, referring to Scarborough. “I was a horrible person and an even worse wife. I am ashamed to even look in the mirror.”

It’s unclear at this time whether the mom of three was the real author of the post.
