No-no and a no to Cano.
Let me get off my Dr. Seuss energy. But those were two of the big topics in Mets land over the weekend. Five pitchers combined for a no-hitter for the Mets in Queens on a magical, chilly Friday night against the Phillies. After taking two of three games from the division rival, they had an important decision to make Monday to get the roster down to 26 players. That was cutting the $40 million man, Robinson Cano. The 39-year-old was designated for assignment, a move signaling money means nothing to Steve Cohen and company.
It’s about winning.
To talk Cano, the no-no and the first-place Mets, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and I. In the second half of the show, we chat with Kelsie Whitmore of the Staten Island FerryHawks. On Sunday, the outfielder became the first woman to start in a MLB partner league. - CANO NO MO’: This was the right move. Cano’s bat speed was slow and he doesn’t have as much versatility as other guys. This was a sign that if you are not helping the team win, your price tag doesn’t matter. Mets fans are thrilled with the decision, especially after Dom Smith’s big night Sunday.
- COMBINED NO-HITTER: Friday night was a special one at Citi Field. This was a true team effort. Many people at the ballpark had no idea there was a no-no going on until late in the game. Tylor Megill continues pitching incredibly well and the bullpen has done a solid job. We also play the Spanish call of the final out compared to Howie Rose’s radio call.
- SERIES WIN: 7-for-7 in series wins for the Mets. This team is playing together and backing one another up. Max Scherzer was not at his best Sunday and the offense put up 10 runs to make sure he picked up his fourth win. The Mets and Yankees have the top two records in MLB. This is great for NY sports, which is shifting in the right direction. We also unbox the Francisco Lindor bobble gnome and play Buck Showalter’s reaction to it.
