Seton Hall handles Xavier to likely lock up March Madness berth

CINCINNATI — Jared Rhoden had a career-high 30 points as Seton Hall defeated Xavier 82-66 on Saturday.

Rhoden shot 8-for-14 from the field, made 12 of 13 foul shots and chipped in six rebounds for the Pirates (18-9, 9-8 Big East). Tray Jackson had 17 points, making all five of his 3-point attempts, for Seton Hall. Kadary Richmond added 12 points, all of them coming in the second half, and seven assists. Tyrese Samuel had seven rebounds.

A senior from Baldwin, L.I., Rhoden’s previous career high came Nov. 22 against Ohio State, when he scored 29 points in a 79-76 defeat.

Seton Hall has won three straight games and six of its past eight and likely have locked an NCAA Tournament berth. The Pirates will close the regular season next week with games against Georgetown and Creighton as the Pirates look to improve their NCAA Tournament seeding after picking up a sixth Quadrant 1 victory Saturday.

Colby Jones tied a career high with 20 points and had 10 rebounds for the Musketeers (17-11, 7-10), who have lost four straight. Zach Freemantle added 11 points and Adam Kunkel scored 10 for Xavier.

The Pirates have won four consecutive games at the Cintas Center and improved to 2-0 against the Musketeers for the season. Seton Hall defeated then-No. 25 Xavier 73-71 on Feb. 9.
