Humphries, who was born in Calgary and previously won a pair of Olympic gold medals in the two-woman bobsled for Canada, began competing for Team USA in 2019. She left Team Canada after claiming she was verbally and mentally abused by a coach.

“As I age, I’ve learned life is very unpredictable and we don’t always know our path forward and what the future holds,” Humphries said. “We do the best we can with each and every obstacle or path change that gets thrown at us. What’s important is to fight for ourselves.”

The 36-year-old won the monobob by 1.54 seconds, finishing her four runs with a total time of 4:19.27.

“I chose a nation,” Humphries said. “And it chose me back. To know that we could do this together as a team, it’s a huge honor.”

Meyers Taylor claimed her third Olympic silver medal (the first two coming in the two-woman bobsled) after spending the start of the Beijing Games in isolation because of a positive COVID-19 test. The 37-year-old California native saved her best run for last, leapfrogging Canada’s Christine de Bruin into second place.

“I am to the moon with this medal,” Meyers Taylor said. “I was, at one point, just trying to make it to the race. So to be here now, a silver medalist, it feels so amazing.”

De Bruin hung on for the bronze medal, finishing 1.76 seconds behind her former teammate Humphries.
