How new Giants GM Joe Schoen feels about Daniel Jones

It sounds like Joe Schoen is committed to Daniel Jones at quarterback for the Giants.

“Once the new staff gets in here, head coach, offensive coordinator, entire staff, we’re gonna dive into the film and look at what allows Daniel to put his best foot forward,” Schoen said during his introductory press conference. “… He’s a great kid.”

Schoen said he’s already met Jones in the building over the last two days, and he’s excited to work with the Duke product.

Three years into his career, Jones has struggled to live up to the expectations that come with being the No. 6 overall pick. In 11 games this season, Jones threw for 2,428 yards at the helm of a lagging offense before a neck injury ended his season prematurely.

At 24, though, there’s still time to unleash Jones’ potential, and that seems to be a focus for the new GM.

“When the new staff gets in here, we’ll build an offense around Daniel to accentuate what he does best,” Schoen said.

The first order of business for Schoen is to hire a head coach, with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll looking like a potential frontrunner as of Wednesday morning.

Daboll has a strong track record with quarterbacks, having helped develop Josh Allen in Buffalo and working for a year with Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama prior to that.

Brian Flores, who worked with Tagovailoa in Miami, and former Falcons coach Dan Quinn, whose coordinator experience is on the defensive side, are the other candidates of note.

Next year will be the last of Jones’ rookie contract, after which the Giants will need to decide whether to commit money to him over the long term.
