Jason Garrett being considered for Duke coaching vacancy after Giants firing
Jason Garrett may be on the verge of finding a new job.
The ousted Giants offensive coordinator is being considered to be the next head coach at Duke University, according to the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer.
The university parted ways with former head coach David Cutcliffe last month after the two sides mutually agreed to separate. The team’s search hasn’t garnered as much attention as the LSU and USC searches have, but it’s nevertheless another part of the wild coaching carousel in college football.
The team’s other candidates include Clemson assistant Tony Elliott, Texas A&M assistant Mike Elko, East Carolina coach Mike Houston and Army coach Jeff Monken.
Garrett spent a season and a half as the Giants’ offensive coordinator beginning in 2020. He was fired in November following a miserable offensive performance against the Buccaneers in Week 11. Big Blue ranked 25th in points per game at the time of his dismissal and ranked second-to-last in 2020.
Garrett’s dismissal was at least part in due to the lack of development by quarterback Daniel Jones, who starred at Duke before being drafted by the Giants with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Before his stint with the Giants, Garrett spent nine seasons as the Cowboys’ head coach until 2019. Over the span of two years, he could go from coaching the NFL’s most valuable team to running a middling ACC program known much more for basketball.
