Man shot in Memphis next to bakery where Young Dolph was killed
A man was shot at a Tennessee store next to the cookie shop where rapper Young Dolph was gunned down a day earlier, police said.
The shooting at a Family Dollar store Thursday in Memphis — adjacent to Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, where Dolph died Wednesday — left one man wounded. He’s expected to survive, cops said in a statement.
Two of the suspects were immediately caught and another was caught after trying to take off, police said, adding there’s no evidence that the shooting was connected to Dolph’s slaying.
The three men arrested were identified by police as Terrance Jones, 23, Jailon Nelvis, 19, and Tavis McQueen, 22.
The gunfire rang out as mourners gathered at the cookie shop’s parking lot. A photojournalist told the Memphis Commercial Appeal the victim was struck in the leg during a drive-by shooting.
Cops put up barricades around the cookie shop after the shooting, likely ending the impromptu gatherings in front of the store in the wake of Dolph’s slaying, the newspaper reported.
Hours earlier, Memphis police released photos of two gunmen suspected of killing the 36-year-old rapper inside his favorite bakery before fleeing in a white Mercedes-Benz.
Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thorton Jr., was pronounced dead inside the bakery. The hip-hop star broke onto the scene in 2016 with his studio debut album, “King of Memphis.” He followed with three top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, including last year’s “Rich Slave,” which peaked at No. 4.
Dolph was born in Chicago before his family moved to Memphis when he was an infant, the Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday. The rapper was well-known throughout the city and stopped at the cookie shop whenever he returned home, according to the newspaper.
His suspected shooters were captured on surveillance footage approaching Dolph with their guns drawn, Memphis police said. No arrests have been announced by the department in connection to Dolph’s slaying.
