Matt Stafford’s wife accused of hurling pretzel at 49ers fan in ‘weak moment’

At least it was a soft pretzel.

Kelly Stafford, the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, apologized on Instagram in response to a commenter who chimed in after Los Angeles’ 31-10 Monday night loss to the 49ers.

“At last nights game at Levi Stadium, WHY DID YOU THROW A PRETZEL AT A NINER FAN sitting behind me???” a commenter asked in a screen grab captured by TMZ. “Who do you think you are to do such a thing? You are lucky you didn’t hit me with it because the outcome would have been different for YOU.

“Show some class and support your husband and his new team with grace please. I am a Rams fan and am embarrassed by your actions last night that is why I am sharing with other [sic]. Hopefully you will be more aware of what you are doing in the future and set a better example for your children.”

Stafford apologized, saying that she had “zero excuse” and that “I’m an idiot.”

“[G]irl I knowwwww I’m an idiot,” she responded to the comment. “He was saying a bunch of things that were aggressive towards our crew but zero excuse. I tried to apologize, but in the end knew I was wrong. Will always stand up for my guy and everyone I love, but obviously needed to do it completely different! I’m embarrassed too! Sorry you had to witness me in my weak moment!”

TMZ adds a witness account to the story, saying that Kelly Stafford responded to trash talk by throwing the pretzel at a 49ers fan, and that eventually Levi’s Stadium security escorted Stafford and those she was with to another part of the stadium.

The Staffords have been together since they were students at University of Georgia, where Matthew played quarterback and Kelly was a cheerleader. They married in 2015. Kelly has been candid about their relationship, recently revealing that a panic attack exposed relationship issues.

Matthew Stafford is an NFL MVP candidate in his first season with the Rams after being traded by the Detroit Lions, having thrown 24 touchdown passes to eight interceptions.

However, the Rams have faltered in November, dropping two games in a row to the Titans and 49ers. Nonetheless, the Rams are 7-3, with a bye this week before heading to Green Bay to play the Packers in a marquee matchup on Nov. 28.
