Cuomo eyeing old NY attorney general post in bid for political comeback

After being run out of the Executive Mansion, Andrew Cuomo is considering a run for the state attorney general post he held before he was governor, people with direct knowledge of his thinking tell The Post.

In the last 24 hours, several of Cuomo’s confidants have mentioned — to both elected Democratic officials and party insiders — that Cuomo could run for attorney general in 2022.

Current AG Letitia James has announced her candidacy for governor, leaving the role of AG wide open, these people contend.

“People in Cuomo’s orbit are tossing it out there,” a person with direct knowledge told The Post.

“They’re floating it … and gauging people’s reactions.”

Even as Cuomo’s reputation has hit a new low — since he was forced to resign in the face of an Albany impeachment probe and the findings of an investigation by James’ office that said he sexually harassed multiple female staffers — his campaign coffers remain high.

The former governor has $18 million in his war chest — and he can deploy it on any political race he chooses to enter. That kind of cash could give him a serious advantage compared to other possible AG candidates. In 2018, James won the race handily with $1 million — just a fraction of Cuomo’s cash.

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi denied that his boss was considering a run for attorney general, a post he held from 2007 to 2010, and told The Post, “There is a ton of idle speculation out there and we can’t control if we continue to take up valuable real estate in people’s heads.”

In an interview with New York Magazine released Friday, Cuomo would not rule out any future runs for political office. “I don’t know what the future holds,” Cuomo said in the interview. “I’m at peace. Look, it’s simple: I trust the people and the truth will out.”
