They might finally #FreeBritney Friday.
Britney Spears has a key court hearing in California that could finally end the 13-year conservatorship that she has called “abusive.”
The 39-year-old pop superstar’s case will go before Los Angeles County Superior Court Friday at 4:30 p.m. (ET) where Judge Brenda Penny is expected to rule on whether to terminate the conservatorship that has controlled the pop superstar’s life and $60 million fortune since 2008.
Britney Spears’ attorney, her parents, and the court appointees who control the financial arrangement all publicly support termination — leaving supporters optimistic it might finally end.
But the judge has not given overt signals to what she will decide, and she has considerable discretion and power.
In addition, legal or bureaucratic hurdles could still slow down what might seem like the inevitable end.
Britney’s fiancee, Sam Ashgari, shared a video early Friday of them both smiling in “#FreeBritney” T-shirts, but it is not immediately clear if the singer will take part in the hearing.
However, there will undoubtedly be a crush of her loyal supporters who made the hashtag go viral, and who the star has praised for helping push her case for freedom.
“This week is gonna be very interesting for me!” Spears wrote on Instagram earlier this week. “I haven’t prayed for something more in my life!”
Spears’ parents, dad Jamie and mom Lynne, first moved to control her life during her high-profile breakdown and mental health crisis in 2008.
As recently as six months ago, it appeared the conservatorship would continue indefinitely — until the star told the same judge in June that she had “lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy.”
“I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” she said, calling for her father to be jailed.
“I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive,” she said. “It’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end.”
The star now has just hours to see if that dream is coming true.
