Jon Gruden considering legal options against NFL after email leak

Jon Gruden is considering legal options against the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell over the email leak that resulted in his resignation, according to CBS Sports.

Though Goodell and the league have maintained that they were not responsible for leaking the emails in which Gruden used racist, homophobic and misogynistic language, Raiders owner Mark Davis called for a written report of the Washington Football Team investigation that produced the emails. Goodell said last week that no such report would be produced.

Some lawyers, per CBS Sports, have said Gruden could have a tortious interference case. His claim in such a case would be that the league influenced his resignation with private emails sent while he was not employed, leaking them at a time to do as much damage as possible.

According to the report, some colleges have had discussions about Gruden as a potential head coach candidate. It’s not believed that Gruden has interest in coaching college football.

The NFL has said there were no other incidents of offensive language in the 650,000 emails searched as part of the WFT investigation, but according to CBS Sports, there are still questions about whether that is the case.

The timing and nature of the leak is a large part of the issue for Gruden, according to the report. The emails were leaked in the middle of the season, and Gruden has thus far been the only figure to suffer ramifications for an investigation that was meant to focus on the Washington Football Team.

“This is anything but over,” one source told CBS Sports.
