This isn’t to say that at 65 years old, and three seasons removed from overseeing a front office, Brian Sabean would necessarily want the job. But whether it’s Sandy Alderson or Steve Cohen directly, somebody within the Mets hierarchy should at least pick up the phone and ask the question.
Sabean constructed Giants teams that won three World Series titles in five seasons beginning in 2010. It’s the closest thing baseball has seen to a dynasty in the 21st century, and it was built on scouting and player development.
The Mets, who seek a president of baseball operations, have tried for Theo Epstein, Billy Beane and David Stearns, none of whom are coming. They have not spoken to Sabean — a name that has arisen among executives and scouts throughout the industry who wonder if he might be the right fit in Queens.
