J.R. Smith attacked by bees during college golf tournament

J.R. Smith’s first college golf tournament had some birdies — and lots of insects.

On Day 2 of his debut with North Carolina A&T’s team Tuesday, Smith got a visit from the medical cart after he stepped on a nest and was stung by angry bees or wasps, according to reporters at the Phoenix Invitational at Elon University in Burlington, N.C.

Smith was playing his final round when he apparently went searching for his ball in the woods on the 12th hole. It was there that he came in contact with the nest.

Video footage showed the two-time NBA champion wiping down his ankles while on the green. Smith was standing under his own power, and didn’t appear to be seriously injured in the clip.

While delayed by the incident, Smith stood to the side to be evaluated, as other groups played through.

Additional photos from the tournament show Smith receiving medical attention — where his shoes were off and there was ice wrapped around his ankles. Smith resumed play after he was treated.

Smith, who played three-plus of his 16-year NBA career with the Knicks, enrolled at North Carolina A&T in August. He is pursuing a degree in liberal studies while playing for the golf team.

The 36-year-old freshman shot a 12-over-par 83 in Round 1 on Monday and a 7-over 78 in Round 2. Smith finished his round Tuesday in 81st place.
