Jets safety Marcus Maye was arrested for DUI in February and is facing charges related to a car accident in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to court records.
Maye was charged with driving under the influence, DUI/damage to property and leaving the scene of an accident on Feb. 23. He posted a $1,500 bond. It was Maye’s first DUI arrest, according to the court records. There is a Zoom hearing scheduled for Oct. 20 in the case, according to the court filings.
According to the police report, Maye allegedly hit the left rear of a Volvo while driving on the Florida Turnpike at 7:33 p.m. The police discovered Maye in his black Mercedes SUV on the side of the road to the north of where the Volvo was. Maye’s car had damage to the front right that matched the damage to the Volvo.
The police report states that Maye was “unresponsive when approached and moving side to side.” It also says that he “seemed unaware of what was occurring” and that he did not know he had hit another vehicle. The police officer wrote that he observed vomit on the driver’s side door and on the floor and could smell alcohol on Maye’s breath. The officer also said that Maye’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred, but Maye told the officer he had not been drinking and the smell was from two days prior. Maye declined to give them a breath sample and was arrested for DUI/DUI property damage.
Maye is also facing a civil suit from the driver of the Volvo — Jamila Abraham of Belle Glade, Fla. She is seeking in excess of $30,000, according to the court filing.
The arrest opens up Maye to discipline from the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy. The Jets declined to comment since it is a pending legal matter.
Erik Burkhardt, Maye’s agent, said, “It is an ongoing legal matter and our attorney has advised us we cannot comment. We are confident it will be positively resolved. We look forward to Marcus getting back on the field soon.”
The Jets drafted Maye in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He is the longest-tenured player on the team. He had a contract dispute with the team this offseason. The Jets used the franchise tag on Maye and the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a long-term contract. Maye is currently playing on the tag for $10.6 million.
Maye suffered an ankle sprain in the team’s loss to the Broncos on Sept. 26 and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. He did not play in Sunday’s win over the Titans. Burkhardt tweeted last week that Maye would be healthy by the trading deadline on Nov. 2, giving the implication Maye no longer wants to play with the Jets.
