Noah Syndergaard will pitch a second outing on Friday or Saturday against the Braves, according to manager Luis Rojas, after making his long-awaited comeback from Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
Team president Sandy Alderson said the club was “encouraged” by what it saw Tuesday — Syndergaard struck out two in a perfect inning, reaching 96 mph on his fastball, while not throwing breaking balls.
“On the other hand, it was one inning,” Alderson said Wednesday before the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Marlins.
While Syndergaard said Tuesday night he was “fairly certain” that he and the Mets would reach an agreement to keep him in Flushing, Alderson declined to say whether it would be a situation where the Mets will either make him a qualifying offer or nothing at all.
“Not that those two innings are going to tell us anything definitive but I think for him those innings were important,” Alderson said. “What I do appreciate is players who have a real passion for New York, and that’s not just because they can be more successful in New York. … I’m happy Noah wants to be in New York. That’s a big step in that direction.”
Catcher Tomas Nido landed on the IL with a left thumb sprain — his third stint with that injury this season. Patrick Mazeika was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take his roster spot. … RHP Sean Reid-Foley was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, making a roster spot for Syndergaard, who was the 29th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader.
