MIAMI — Derek Jeter was busy with the trade deadline as president of the Marlins, but he still saw what his old team did in adding a pair of powerful lefty bats in Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo.
“Look, the Steinbrenner family, from The Boss [George Steinbrenner] to Hal, they’re always trying to get better and better,’’ Jeter said before his Marlins lost 3-1 to the Yankees on Friday night at loanDepot Park. “They don’t hesitate to make big moves, so I’m not surprised.”
He added he keeps tabs on his former team “from afar.”
“I’ve got a tough enough time with what we’re doing here,’’ Jeter said.
He is still waiting to find success as an executive similar to the success he achieved when he played in The Bronx during a career that earned him a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Jeter’s induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y., was postponed a year ago due to COVID-19. Jeter said he has just started to make notes for the speech he’ll give when he finally is inducted on Sept. 8.
“We just had the trade deadline,’’ Jeter said. “So now maybe I’ll start to think about it a little bit more. I don’t think I’ve gotten too excited yet.”
He’s happy fans will get to go to his induction ceremony, which wouldn’t have been the case had it not been pushed back again earlier this year.
“No fans would have been kind of strange,’’ Jeter said. “I understood it, but it would’ve been strange.”
