First lady Jill Biden was scheduled to undergo a procedure Thursday to remove something from her left foot that had been there since her visit to Hawaii this past weekend.
The first lady’s spokesman, Michael LaRosa, said in a statement that Jill Biden had “stepped on an object on the beach,” but did not elaborate on what the object was. LaRosa added that President Biden would accompany his wife to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where the procedure would take place.
Jill Biden arrived in Hawaii Saturday after leading the US delegation to the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. LaRosa said she stepped on the object prior to making two public appearances Sunday. The first lady visited a vaccination clinic before joining military families for a barbecue at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickham.
In April, the first lady underwent what was described only as a “common medical procedure” at an outpatient center in Washington, DC. President Biden accompanied his wife to the procedure, which lasted approximately two hours.
At the time, spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said Jill Biden “tolerated the procedure well”.
President Biden has not provided an extensive update on his medical status since December of 2019. In May, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said the president would undergo a checkup “later this year, and the results would be released to the public.”
Republican lawmakers, led by former White House doctor Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), have called on Biden to undergo a cognitive test due to a series of verbal gaffes and stumbles.
