Jets’ run game gets off to an ideal start

Observations from Jets training camp on Wednesday.

Hole-ly Cow!

As coach Robert Saleh warned, it’s difficult to judge the run game until padded practices begin. That said, LT Mekhi Becton and LG Alijah Vera-Tucker opened a huge hole for Tevin Coleman to scamper through during team drills. A vision of the Jets’ ideal future.

Kick up a fuss

After improving his field-goal success rate from 70.4 percent in 2019 to 86.7 percent, Sam Ficken started his third year with the Jets by going 1-for-4 on field goals. His competition, Chris Naggar, was 3-for-4.

Caught my eye

Lineups change throughout the course of training camp, but newcomer Tyler Kroft was the tight end with the starting offense and drops-prone returning starter Chris Herndon was with the second unit. Kroft signed a one-year, $2 million deal to leave the Bills as a free agent, but his best season (42 catches, 404 yards, seven TDs) was with the 2017 Bengals.

Zach Wilson’s Day

QB Zach Wilson was nowhere to be seen as his contract stalemate continued. He is the only rookie from the NFL’s 259-player draft class yet to sign a contract. Mike White looked smoother than James Morgan among the two quarterbacks in camp.

Medical Report

DT Quinnen Williams, who was hoping to be ready for training camp, likely will miss at least two more weeks after foot surgery. Same goes for DE Kyle Phillips. OLB Vinny Curry and S Ashytn Davis are expected to miss the season opener.
