Girl, 9, dies after being pulled from Staten Island reservoir

A young girl died after being pulled from the Silver Lake reservoir on Staten Island on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The 9-year-old girl, wearing a pink bathing suit, made her way into the fenced-in body of water, where swimming is banned, with seven other kids and an adult just before 2 p.m., according to police and sources.

They were putting their feet in the water,” a police spokesperson said. “She took a step too far and went in.”

Cops said the adult tried to save the girl but couldn’t and fell in herself.

The FDNY scuba unit pulled the girl out and she was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where she died at 2:45 p.m., according to authorities.

A pair of pink flip-flops remained at the scene where six detectives stood behind police tape.

Residents were concerned about how the 9-year-old girl ended up over the approximately 3-foot barrier and into the lake.

“It is a tragedy … Where was her parent?” Kalypso Layo, 21, said. “That’s crazy. She’s a kid.”

A 58-year-old, who only gave his first name, Mike, called the death a “shame.”

“There’s adequate fencing,” he said. “Somebody must have had to help her to get over because I don’t think a 9-year-old would be able to climb.”
