Mets-Yankees’ Subway Series opener rained out

The Subway Series will have to wait.

The game between the Yankees and Mets at Yankee Stadium was postponed due to rain Friday night and will be made up as part of a split-admission doubleheader on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The second game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

A source confirmed the Yankees wanted to make up Friday’s game as part of a two-stadium doubleheader on Sept. 12, but the Mets — who already have doubleheaders scheduled for Aug. 31 and Sept. 4 — declined to go along with the idea.

Tickets for Friday night’s postponed game may be used for the rescheduled first game on Sunday or be exchanged for tickets to a similar regular-season game this year.

Jordan Montgomery is slated to start Saturday’s game against the Mets, with Gerrit Cole pushed back to one of the games on Sunday. Aaron Boone said the other starter on Sunday is still to be determined.

It’s the Yankees’ second straight washout, after their game against the Angels was rained out Thursday, so they haven’t played since Wednesday’s horrendous loss to the Angels.

Asked about the timing of the postponements, Boone said: “We want to play. We can’t wait to get out there and play. The weather’s not cooperating. We want to start to get this train moving in the right way.”
