Listen to Episode 64 of ‘Amazin’ But True’: Mets Need Bats to Wake Up feat. Jon Niese

Jon Niese Anthony J. Causi

Bueller….Bueller….Bueller? The Mets’ bats have not shown up to class and the result is they’re last in runs per game. Luckily, the pitching has been brilliant and Luis Rojas’ squad still holds a four-game lead atop the NL East following a four-game split with the Phillies over the weekend. The Mets will get some help though this week when they get another bat back in the lineup as Brandon Nimmo is expected to return Tuesday for the start of a three-game set in Atlanta.

To talk about the series split at Citi Field, Nimmo’s return and where the Mets stand, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring an interview with former Mets pitcher Jon Niese.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:

  • SERIES SPLIT: Recurring theme is the Mets leaving runners on base, not moving runners over and bringing them home. They got a few timely hits against the Phillies and some terrific pitching that carried them. Need some more small ball. Citi Field was rocking over the weekend in front of the biggest crowds since 2019 in Queens.
  • FANS BOOING: Some fans still booing Francisco Lindor, but does it make sense? Figgie says this is why some players do not want to play in NY. Failure is a part of the game and the team is still in first place. We also play a funny voicemail from my parents after they heard my appearance on WFAN with Sal Licata talking about all the different foods I eat at Mets games.

Former Mets pitcher (2008-2016)

  • PLAYING CAREER: Has not officially hung it up yet, but can’t throw as fast as he used to. Wally Backman would probably give him chance with Ducks. Last played in the Dominican League at end of 2019.
  • NOSE JOB: The story behind Carlos Beltran paying for his nose job.
  • BABY DURING GAME: The story behind coming out of a game he pitched in 2015 as he FaceTimed his wife when she gave birth to their son.
  • 2015 METS/DeGROM: Memories from the 2015 Mets getting to the World Series and Jacob deGrom’s growth from 2015 to now.
