1 dead, 8 injured in Savannah apartment complex shooting

One person was killed and at least eight others injured, including a baby and two teens, in a mass shooting inside a Savannah, Georgia, apartment complex Friday night.

The children, an 18-month-old who was struck near the ankle and a 13-year-old, both have non-life-threatening injuries, according to local station WTOC-11.

But two of the adults were in critical condition, according to Savannah ABC affiliate WJCL.

The victim was identified as 20-year-old Arthur Milton.

It was one of three mass shootings in the country overnight. In Austin, Texas, 14 people were injured when a man shot into a downtown crowd. In Chicago, 10 were shot and one killed when two men shot up a street on the South Side.

Savannah police said officers responded around 9 p.m. to the Robert Hitch Village/Fred Wessels Homes, a 250-unit affordable housing complex just three blocks from police headquarters.

The victims were standing outside an apartment that was shot up on Tuesday.

“We don’t think it was a coincidence,” Minter said. No witnesses would talk to cops about the Tuesday incident, he said.

Three apartments and six cars were hit and police found 60 shell casings at the scene after Friday’s shooting. The shots reportedly came from a dark-colored or red sedan.

There is currently no information on motive or suspects, and police are still gathering information.

Just before 3 a.m., Savannah Mayor Van Johnson tweeted an appeal for help finding the shooter. “Last evening, #Savannah, like so many other cities in the nation has been victimized by a mass shooting,” he said. “Friday night, 9 people were shot including a 13-year-old & a 2-year-with non-life threatening injuries. One person has died. We need your help with info.”
