A woman died and nine others were injured early Saturday morning when two men opened fire in the parking lot of Chicago’s oldest Black-owned business.
Lem’s Bar-B-Q on the city’s South Side had been closed for hours, but there was still a crowd in the lot in the busy neighborhood at around 2 a.m. when the two men started shooting.
The 29-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen and left knee and later died at University of Chicago Medical Center, ABC-7 Chicago reported.
The other victims ranged in age from 23 to 46. They were taken to area hospitals for gunshot wounds in their arms, legs, feet and, for the 46-year-old, in his buttocks. All were in good to fair condition, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The incident was one of three mass shootings in the country overnight. In Savannah, Georgia, 1 person was killed and eight injured, including an 18-month old and two teen-agers in a drive-by shooting in an apartment complex. In Austin, Texas, 14 people were injured when a man shot into a downtown crowd.
Pastor Donovan Price of Solutions and Resources Ministry was in the crowd that gathered later Saturday morning at the Chicago scene where the shooting occurred. He described the aftermath as “mayhem.”
“People running around, some people still shot, victims around the corner, down a block or two, people crying of course, people trying to figure out who’s going to which hospital,” he told ABC-7.
No one was in custody for the attack. Detectives are investigating.
The victims are among two dead and 18 injured in shootings in Chicago since Friday afternoon, The Chicago Tribune reported.
