At least one killed in Portland as car plows into crowd

One person was killed and at least five others were hurt when a car plowed into pedestrians and parked cars “for several blocks” in Portland Monday, authorities said.

Portland police said the incident took place shortly after 1 p.m., when cops received reports of a car hitting people and vehicles.

After crashing near Southeast Stark Street and Southeast 18th Avenue, the driver fled on foot, but was stopped by locals who witnessed the mayhem, police said.

Responding police took the driver into custody. Charges are pending, authorities said.

In an earlier press release, the Portland Police Bureau said “There are crime scenes along several blocks.

“Police ask that witnesses or anyone who finds what they believe is evidence reach out to officers in the area….”

Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene at Southeast 19th and Washington streets in the Oregon city, with motorists cautioned to avoid the area, Portland Fire & Rescue tweeted.

“SE portland between 19th and 33rd Ave near Stark: multiple pedestrians struck by a car,” the site reported. “1 critical injury. 4-5 non critical injuries.”

“My wife is there,” one man posted on Twitter “The piece of s–t hit 8 people on purpose and was speeding 50-60 mph.”

“My wife was parked on the street and he hit her car while fleeing,” he wrote.

Portland police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
