Raffensbperger evacuated as armed militia members protest outside Georgia Capitol

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his staff were evacuated from the state Capitol on Wednesday as armed militia members were gathered outside, according to a local report

The move came as supporters of President Trump attempted to enter the building to deliver written grievances over the Nov. 3 election, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.

We heard reports of threats and left immediately,” Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs told the paper.

Militia members armed with assault-style weapons were reportedly among the protesters who gathered outside, as was a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Raffensperger and his senior staff were “escorted out to safety,” according to a tweet from Washington Post reporter Amy Gardner.

The chaos erupted around the same time that Trump supporters stormed into the US Capitol as lawmakers began debating whether to certify the Electoral College vote count in Arizona.

It also came amid controversy over a Saturday phone call in which Trump urged Raffensberger to “find” enough votes in the Peach State to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory there.
