The Giants Saturday morning were hit with more unwanted news in this ongoing pandemic when they were informed Stephen Brown, an offensive assistant, tested positive for COVID-19. This comes on the heels of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s positive test earlier in the week.
The Giants learned of Brown’s test result and immediately began working with the NFL’s chief medical officer regarding close contacts. Brown is self-isolated. The Giants’ training facility remains open and the team was set for a morning walk-through practice as continued preparation for Sunday night’s game against the Browns at MetLife Stadium.
Garret’s role on game-days as the play-caller will be taken over by Freddie Kitchens, the tight ends coach.
This sort of mid-stream adjustment is the norm this season and something first-year head coach Joe Judge said is a necessary part of football in 2020.
“We’re always thinking ahead and thinking of the ‘What if’ scenarios,’’ Judge said on Friday. “The last thing we always talk about as a staff on Saturday in our staff meeting is everyone go to bed tonight and wake up and make sure we have a solid plan in place that if you wake up tomorrow and we get some bad COVID news that we have a progression of who’s going to do what and how we’re going to continue the game plan or adjust the game plan. This is something we’ve talked about on a regular basis.’
