Vanderbilt football retaining Sarah Fuller after historic debut

Sarah Fuller will be traveling with Vanderbilt for Saturday’s game at Georgia.

After becoming the first woman to play in a Power 5 football game last weekend when she delivered the second-half kickoff against Missouri – a designed squib kick that was downed without a return – Fuller is expected remain as one of the Commodores’ two kickers.

“She’ll be with us on the trip to Georgia, and we’re going to put the best people out there,” interim coach Todd Fitch told reporters Tuesday. “And if she’s our best option, we’ll continue to work with her and we’ll do the best we can for the team.”

Vanderbilt (0-8) fired coach Derek Mason on Sunday, one day after the 41-0 loss to Missouri. Fitch has evidently opted to keep Fuller around, telling reporters that she practiced with the team Tuesday and will be on the travel roster.

Fitch also mentioned that none of the special teams players who missed last weekend’s game due to coronavirus protocols have been cleared to return to the team.

Fuller, who was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week Monday, became just the third woman to participate in an FBS football game, joining Katie Hndia and April Goss. Just a few days earlier, Fuller was playing goalkeeper for the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team as they upset Arkansas for the SEC title.

Her historic football debut made headlines, with many criticizing how her kick didn’t go very far. She took to Twitter to give her two cents to those who didn’t understand it was a designed play.

“I’m just going to leave this here…” the fifth-year senior wrote with a video of her field-length kick from a Nov. 17 soccer game.
